Why neXus?
The word neXus is a cellular biology term meaning to connect or to adjoin two materials. That’s what we’re doing at neXus on many levels- connecting with each other, connecting those not yet part of the family of God to Him/ His plan for their life and connecting with God ourselves.
Also, the big “X” in neXus has an origin, basically, back in the day, the early church had to operate in secrecy and a symbol that looked like an “X” was their code or ‘gang sign’ if you will. The English letter “X” looks like the Greek letter “Chi”, which in fact was the first letter of the word Christ in ancient times. So early church members would leave a painted or engraved “X” to let other followers know they had been there or that the place was favorable for other covert Christians to convene freely. Simply said, “X’ stands for Christ and just like that letter is in the middle of the word “neXus” so we want Christ to be at the center of all we do and all we are!
Balance
“The man who fears God finds the middle ground on all issues” Ecclesiastes 7:18b. We at nexus and Frontline seek to live balanced lives as students & as leaders, we aspire to walk in a faith that will last. We try to do this by presenting a balanced spiritual diet to our students and as adult leaders. We do this by communicating the 3M’s, bread & water.
Our method is described in three words: Master, Mission, Mate Master
Our master is Jesus. Our mission is growing in him & beginning to walk in the plan and purpose he has for our lives. Our mate- well we don’t really promote dating much because we believe that: The right thing at the wrong time is the wrong thing!
We realize that while the opposite sex seems to have a gravity we naturally move towards; so we want to keep things at bay until the right time because let’s face it, dating relationships often take us places we don’t want to go or need to go when we are young. So while we aren’t going to chastise those who choose to date, we as a ministry team and church feel that we will have enough time in our lives to put our mate (the opposite sex/husband or wife) before what we do, we don’t think that high school or jr. high is the right timing or place for that. We also realize that later on in life our balance spiritual priorities move from master, mission, mate to master, mate, mission.
We teach our students if they can live our the first part of the equation while they are young, when they make the shift to the latter later on in life and they’ll have more fulfilling & balanced marriages, families, careers & ultimately walks with God!
Master- “Worship the lord your god and serve him only!” Deuteronomy 6:10
Mission- What we love determines where we go! “Therefore, as you are going, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
Mate- “But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world- how he can please his wife- and his interests are divided.” 1 Corinthians 7:33
Balance = Healthy Living
We intend to give our students a healthy balance of BREAD (the Word of God) and of WATER (Spirit of God). We will do this by teaching sound Biblical truth (Doctrine) in a relevant and meaningful way and we will practice together growing, praying and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit of God, whom we as a church, believe lives inside the hearts of all believers and that He equips us to do the same stuff Jesus did and live in the same power He lived in while He was on earth as He instructs us!
We want true and authentic spiritual power, not a spiritual circus. We want to know and live according to His perfect Word- not be stodgy or legalistic Bible thumpers!
